MAKING BETTER CHOICES

Who doesn't want to shop more ethically? It's no secret the fashion industry is a bit shady and we are all part of the picture. The rate in which we buy and discard garments is growing exponentially with not a lot of space for our used clothes (out of sight, out of mind), not to mention plastics and harmful toxins in synthetic materials. Then there's the people who make them - we've all heard of the horror stories and harsh working conditions that take place behind the glamorous facade that we are mesmerised by on a daily basis.

On the other hand, the fashion industry is 1.7 trillion dollar industry that employs countless people and lends way to a lot of new ideas and innovations. There is an immense amount of creativity, hard work and ingenuity taking place all over the world that is inspiring and fascinating. Not only are clothes something we all need to wear (in public, at-least), they are a way of expressing ourselves and supporting our dreams and daily tasks. To put it simply, fashion is a huge part of our lives whether we love it or not.

With all of this in mind, we have so many more choices than we think. We can either turn a blind eye or empower ourselves. Not only as consumers, but as designers, too. Here are some less obvious things you can look out for as a buyer and some things we can do as producers to make better choices and feel good about the brands we support.

QUALITY OVER QUANTITY
Look for things that will not break easily - here at Sewunique I have a saying - beauty is in the details, which translates to choosing, fabric, hardware and finishing techniques that are high quality and will not snap or fray in the wash. Some of our products are more durable than you would expect from lingerie which has been done by design. We want your pieces to last a long time and stay special for longer due to their unique design.

TIMELESS, FLATTERING CUTS
Here at Sewunique we don't follow trends. Our design process is based solely of what will flatter your body and accentuate your best features. We are a womens brand for women - we make our products as stretchy and adjustable as possible to account for the way your body changes. Our style is bold and bright, things you can't find anywhere else and that will bring you joy each time you see them whether it's now or years later.

MINIMISING WASTE
Look for brands that are conscious of their production waste and find creative ways to combat the issue. We are lucky that our products are small in size - we are able to line our pieces with bamboo off-cuts and have systems in place to use as much of our unused fabric & finishes as possible when creating new collections.

CARING FOR YOUR CLOTHES
One way to make clothes last longer (the goal) is to care for them properly. All it takes is a little extra care when doing your laundry. Putting delicate pieces into a bra-bag is a great example that takes barely any time. We are pleased to include a free bra-bag with every order as part of our packaging. Outside of this, there are many ways to recycle your old clothes. You can bleach them, dye them, give them to friends, or send them to Sewunique to cut up and make your next special custom set!

BETTER FABRIC CHOICES
Sometimes we can get blindsided by beautiful products that are made from not so nice materials. All of Sewuniques intimate lining is bamboo which is arguably the most sustainable fabric available. There are also health benefits to wearing bamboo (as opposed to synthetic materials) which plays into our holistic vision for fashion - the more boxes our products tick, the more benefits you will have to wearing them.

Our latest swimwear collection is made from recycled nylon which is a great feeling. The quality is beautiful and the double layered design (reversible styles) ensure longevity and more ways to wear your favourite bikini.
